Jennifer Dylan

Meet Jennifer Dylan an actress and model from Brooklyn who has been natural since 2004. As for why she went natural, Jennifer says, ” I decided to go natural while I was in college. The price of a relaxer was way over my college budget so I chose to grow my hair out and take my chances and to my surprise I had curly hair.” Jennifer maintains her lovely curls with a simple regimen, “I wash my hair about once a week and condition it between washes. I get my color done every 6 – 7 weeks,” she says. “I love Aussie’s leave in conditioning mousse and Moroccan oil.”

As for getting her hair colored, here’s what Jennifer shared about her experience…

I dyed my hair about 2 yrs ago. I started with light brown highlights (my natural color is a dark brown with red undertones) and every 7 weeks or so I go back to have my roots done. Every time I take my hair a little blonder. I am now at a caramel blond with golden blond highlights. I find that the color change does make my hair dryer, but I purchased a great end sealer, conditioner, and a color safe shampoo. My hair has actually doubled in length since I went natural. I highly recommend it, its so much fun and you may get hooked!

“Big and curly, the bigger the better,” is Jennifer’s hair styling philosophy. Her favorite stylist is Ms. Devin Pifer (www.HairByDevin.com). Jennifer says the secret to maintaining healthy hair is a great conditioner. She also makes another suggestion: “change up your hair style, your hair can get bored too!”As for her personal style, Jennifer says, “My style is a mix between Beyonce’s sexy fierceness and the sophisticated and classy Sanaa Lathan. I love H&M and Forever 21, the clothing is fun and its doesn’t break my pocket. A great pair of heels and jeans that fit perfectly are my wardrobe must-haves.”

Christina Daly

Meet Christina Daly from Brighton, UK.

On being natural… I haven’t always been natural. I used to straighten my hair a lot when I was younger. It led to breakage. I’ve only ever relaxed my hair once. It damaged my hair so much and my curls took ages to come back.

Hair care regimen… I tend to only wash my hair like once a week sometimes two. My hair is easier to style when it’s not fresh. I like to deep condition my hair whenever I wash.

Trimming… The last time I had a trim was the other day, but before that I’d say about 6 months ago. I slack when it comes to trimming my hair. I tend to forget about trimming my hair because it is so wild and big, I don’t notice the split ends.

Heat… I hate heat! They messed my hair up big time when I used to straighten. Also, it takes hours to straighten and once it’s finally done it’s so hard to mantain.

Color… I coloured my hair for the first time last summer. I wanted to do it for ages, but I kept putting it off as I didn’t know what colour I wanted. I decided to get a non – permanent. It wasn’t so ‘non – permanent’ and never washed out after 20 washes. I don’t mind because I like the colour, but I don’t so it often. I’ve dyed it once since the first time.

Favorite products… My favorite hair product chages all the time. At the moment, I really like Le Kair Cholesterol for extra dry hair. My favorite shampoo and conditioner is Frizz eez and my fav hair gel is Pink.

Salons… I can’t remember the last time I went to a hair dresser. They are way too expensive and I don’t trust anyone with my hair. I buy my hair products from my local African Carribean Hair Shop called T&Z’s.

Go to hairstyles… I like my hair best when it’s down, big and wild or slicked up in a massive ponytail. I love the Rihanna’s hair at the moment and Amber Rose, but I’m no where near brave enough to go there.

Out of the ordinary… Once I was so deperate for hair cream that I used Johnson’s Baby Lotion ( I do not recommend)!

You should know… I’ve recently signed with a new agency called BM Models (www.bmmodels.co.uk).

Kristin Rodney

Meet Kristin Rodney from NYC, a creative consultant who specializes web and graphic design.

Kristin on going natural and her har care regimen (in her own words)… Upon attending Howard University in 2004, I took interest in constantly reinventing myself. I rocked a cropped cut, a bob, relaxed, straight or braided. I even tried blonde, brown, jet-black, and red! Naturally my hair felt the wrath of my spontaneity and I had no choice but to ‘start fresh.’ Excited about another new look, I cut ALL of my hair in 2007. It was an easy transition. All I had to do was let it grow. Since then, I have been focused on nurtured, conditioned, healthy hair!

My hair care regimen… My hair regimen takes a lot of conditioner and a bit of patience.

Weekly Maintenance: Once a week, usually on a Sunday, I wash my hair gently with Shampoo. Once rinsed out completely, I apply a deep conditioner or a hot oil treatment to my hair. I comb it out with a Denman brush and sit under a heated deep conditioning cap.

Daily Maintenance: I maintain this moisture by co-washing, 2 days a week, in the evening. Once out of the shower, I braid my hair back in five cornrows and cover with a satin cap. I find that this method shaves a lot of time off of my morning routine. When I wake up in the morning. I simply unbraid my hair and go! Its curly, conditioned, semi-dry, and manageable!

On special events, when I want my curls to be more defined I co-wash it, separate it into 5 sections, and finger curl it!

While I used to crave excitement in color and cuts, I currently find enjoyment in creating unique updos. As I am in the arts /creative field, I love experimenting with unique styles and hairdos! Mane & Chic has truly inspired me on my quest to maintain my hair and remain all nat-tur-al. I hope that you find inspiration in my “do” just as I found it in others.

Blair

blair

You remember Blair, right?

She’s back by popular demand with updates on her curly hair regimen.

On being natural…

I have been fully natural 3.5 years. I base this number from the date of my Big Chop in November 2006, which was preceded by 11 months of transitioning. In the past my hair always grew easily and retaining length was never a problem, even if I wore my hair down every day. When I went to college I fried, dyed and blow dried my hair — once I even dyed it blonde twice in one day. Eventually my hair just started falling out. I finally got it cut even at shoulder length, but my hair never retained length. A friend talked about going natural, but I was scared of my natural hair because I equated natural hair to an unkempt Afro and my personal preference was not to have big hair. As I saw her begin to transition, I decided to think seriously about it and that’s when I signed up for longhaircareforum.com and realized the different ranges of natural hair — I even realized that I could embrace whatever my hair decided to throw at me whether that be big, frizzy, kinky, curly, etc. I realize that with a relaxer I was trying to correct something that was the furthest thing from wrong. I stand out in a crowd, my hair is versatile and it’s never been healthier.

Curly hair regimen…

My regimen is  simple — I just occasionally shampoo and cowash a lot. I shampoo when I feel the need — sometimes that’s once every couple of weeks or  twice a week, but it really just depends on how my hair feels. I only shampoo once, no lather AND repeat, and I use it directly on my scalp with only one quick swipe on the rest of my hair. After that, I put conditioner in my hair and use a wide-tooth comb, bottom to top, to distribute the conditioner throughout my hair. Next, I lightly rinse my hair with water, put more conditioner in my hair, put my hair in a loose bun (while squeezing out excess water) and continue with my shower. Before I step out of the shower, I squeeze residual water out of my loose bun. I co-wash and detangle every 1-3 days and my conditioner also serves as my leave-in. I deep condition maybe once or twice a year — definitely not a high priority.

Straightening regimen…

I started straightening my hair in July 2008 after about two years of no heat. I straighten every two or three months. I was addicted to the straight hair for awhile because, for me, it’s low maintenance and less time walking around waiting for my WnG to dry. But every time I straighten my hair I immediately miss my curls and feel as if I disappear into a crowd.

I straighten my hair every few months. I go to a local Ethiopian Salon for my straight look as they have low prices, use limited heat and most of the customers I’ve witnessed have very long hair. They shampoo and conditioner my hair, roller set my hair and then flat iron or curl. I get results that are amazing and I give them a big thumbs up because they can get you Dominican blow-out results without a blow dryer. After this process, I don’t mess with my hair much. I usually keep it for 1-2 weeks and sleep with a satin cap sometimes. I haven’t found a moisturizer for straight hair that I like yet. I know I need to improve my straight hair care regimen because I don’t seem to retain as much length when I straighten.

Go to hair style…

I switch up between ponytails, messy buns and wearing my hair half up/half down or just free flowing. If I wash my hair the night before and I have to be somewhere early the next day I usually end up with a ponytail or bun. If I have enough time to prepare I’ll usually wear my hair down. I usually add a little bit of style by flat twisting the front of my hair and securing with bobby pins (besides that I’m style challenged).

Favorite Products…

Conditioners: Herbal Essences Hydralicious (purple), Herbal Essences Totally Twisted, Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, Suave Humectant. **I know many people are against cones in their hair products for a variety of reasons, but I’ve found less single-strand knots and have seen enhanced curl definition when I use products with cones.

Shampoo: Creme of Nature (green bottle), Joico Moisture Recovery Shampoo (disclaimer: I only use Joico because it was free — I do not suggest expensive products).

Detangler: Wide-Tooth Comb and Denman Brush

Thoughts on growth aids…

Don’t rely on growth aides. Your hair grows. You may just not be retaining your length due to frequent trimming, damage, etc. So keep your scalp clean and protect your ends and if you can just eat healthy, exercise or anything that naturally promotes the health of your body and skin.

Let your hair be the boss…

I know it’s easy to jump on a bandwagon, think specialized or more expensive products are better but in many cases they aren’t. If you think you need special products it’s probably because you are trying to manage and/or train your hair to do something it doesn’t want to do. I’ve learned to embrace frizz and just let my hair live its own life.

On trimming…

(Frequent) Trims are unnecessary. I went two years without scissors touching my hair and have retained my hair. After I started using heat, I employed the Search and Destroy method and have been fine. Unless you NEED the straight across even look, you most likely never really need a professional trim every 6 weeks — I retain about .3-.5 inches a month. If I trimmed more frequently, I would never see any length. Also, I never noticed split ends until I started using heat so I make sure I use heat sparingly!

My first trim since my BC was on July 25, 2008. I had an actual cut (long layers) in November 2009. While both experiences were good, I prefer to do my own trims via the Search and Destroy Method. My hair grows pretty even and even with my Search and Destroy I never end up with see-through ends, so I don’t ever feel the need for a comprehensive trim or cut.

Favorite salon… Almaz Diamond Salon, Arlington, VA. They are an assembly-line style salon (first come first serve) so there is no stylist trying to manage 5 heads at once. I’ve never been in the salon longer than two hours. Prices are also very low, even with long hair.

Ingrea

ingrea

Meet Ingrea from Dallas.

On going natural… I’ve been natural continuously now for 3 years, but I first shaved my head and started from scratch when I was 13 and went through all kinds of hairstyles from there. I got tired of the maintenance of having a relaxer and felt I would have the freedom I wanted and needed by going natural.

On her hair care regimen… I wash my hair 1-2 times a week with conditioner, and I pick it out while conditioning in the shower 1-2 times a week if that often.

Favorite hair care products… Suave conditioners for dry hair, olive oil, and filtered water. I use the 3 of them combined as a leave-in conditioner in a spray bottle.

Tips for maintaining healthy hair… trim ends, deep condition at least twice a month, and drink plenty of water and eat fruits and vegetables.

On style… I am a hippie rocker soul-child. My favorite places to shop is any store that has my sizes at an affordable price (Wet Seal, L’Patricia, Forever 21). I must have earrings. If I don’t have any other accessory on I’ll most likely be wearing earrings.

Words of wisdom… Love life and live each day like it’s your last. Know that just when you think your situation is bad there’s someone going through something far worse. Instead of being unhappy about what you don’t have be grateful for what you do have. Peace and much love!

Lezlie On Hair Styling

featured-curls-1

In her own words…

The curl pattern is pretty intense and most people assume I have a straw set or a curly perm. So I love to wear it out and naturally curly. It’s incredible thick, so sometimes I just want it off my face. To keep cool and for a more polished look I’ll part my hair in the center and tightly roll the hair on both sides to frame the sides of my face. I then secure both sides together in the back and gather them into an elegant bun.
