Tip 15 End Papers/Wraps

Sally Jumbo End WrapsEnd papers are one of the must-have items in my hair care arsenal. I grew up using them, my mom used end wraps. They are especially beneficial to women with curly hair that like to wear roller sets, transitioners, anti-trimmers and women with uneven ends/layers. They keep your ends smooth and straight on the roller. If you have dry frizzy ends, these papers make hair ends appear sleek and free from frizz. I think they are a little bit of a miracle. What’s extra cool is that they are under $2 a box. I only need a new box usually about every few months. I get my end papers from Sally’s, but they are available at almost any beauty supply store.

I stumbled upon a YouTube video where “ChocolateTresses” is using end papers. She keeps folding the end paper. You don’t really need to do all of that. Just wrapping it in half around your hair is good enough. Think of your hair as a hot dog and the end paper as the bun. That’s all you really need to do. “CCshinez” also has a YouTube video. She wraps her paper around several times as well. You can if you want, but I just think it’s time consuming and unnecessary. It might also depend on the roller you use. I’m always using flexi rods and it’s just easier and quicker to just fold the paper in half around your hair. I also use the papers on dry hair at night when I am re-setting a braid out/flexi rod set. I just moisturize, seal the ends with an oil or shea butter, wrap the ends in end wraps and roll on the flexi rod.

Here’s an image of me doing my go to style, using end wraps. Click here to see the results of my braid out right after I take the rollers and braids out. Click here to see what my braid out looks like after it’s been styled.

Do you use end wraps?
Yes and I love them.
Yes, but they weren’t for me.
No, but I want to try.
No and I’m not interested.

Goody Spin Pin

Yesterday, my aunt bought me the new Goody Spin Pins after I went to every drugstore in the city searching this weekend. They come two per pack, are available in blonde and brunette and retail for about $5.99.

Spin Pins securely hold buns in place and the commercial says that it takes the place of 20 bobby pins. I tried them out on my hair in a natural state and they did in fact hold my bun in place. They were also quite easy to remove, you just twist it out. It works kind of like a corkscrew and was unlike anything I’ve ever tried before. They are definitely a new must-have in my regimen. I love that I don’t have to mess around with hair ties or scrunchies.

The Spin Pins would work great if you’re doing the ‘Southern Tease Bun’ and many other loose low tension updos. I’ll try do something this week and post photos. I haven’t seen any curly-haired YouTubers trying the pins in a natural state. I might try it unless someone beats me to it. (I hope someone beats me to it).

Have any of you tried the Goody Spin Pins? What do you think of them? Vote in the poll and leave your comments.

Pink Super Rollers

HAIRART Super 9 1/2 inch Rollers Good for Perming & Setting (Diameter: 7/16 inch/Model: SR1)In case you were not aware, pink is one of Mane & Chic’s signature colors. I had no idea that HairArt sold pink Super Rollers/ flexi rods. Did you? I guess I don’t know about them because Sally Beauty doesn’t sell them. I also just saw some pink and purple flexi rods by Conair called Conair Spiral Rollers at Target that were about 1/2″, but since I have not used them I cannot vouch for them.I just threw away a bag full of cheap flexi rods that I bought from some Asian beauty supply store forever ago. The cheap ones don’t bend and therefore don’t stay in place like HairArt’s Super Rollers. Don’t buy the cheap ones, buy HairArt.

I just bought another pack of the red ones last week. The red Super Rollers are 1/2″. Luckily I have not opened them. I will be returning them to get these pink ones and yes, it’s just because they are pink. Anyway these super girly pink Super Rollers are 7/16″ and come in a pack of ten. They are only a little smaller than the red ones I already have. I’ve been heavy on using the smaller ones for my braid outs lately, but I still experiment with the other colors/sizes I have: blue and purple.

Guess the Price: Brushes

Three brushes here. The prices are $12.99, $95 and $253. Can you tell the prices just by looking? What makes a brush look expensive? Leave your guesses and thoughts in the comments and then click photos to find out if you were right.

Deep Conditioner with Foil

By Kai Chic

If you recall, I went on a Sally’s binge and one of the things I purchased was the Salon Care Foil sheets. I have used them a few times and so far I can see how they would be useful. They are very time consuming and a bit messy to use. I had a self-heating shower cap made of aluminum and I always liked to sleep with that overnight to deep condition. It kind of gave my treatments a little bit of a heat boost when I didn’t feel like sitting under the heat cap. If I could pay someone to foil my hair for deep conditioning purposes, I would definitely do that. But since I don’t feel like being bothered with all of that, I’ll stick to my self-heating cap and heat cap for deep conditioning. The foil sheets were just too messy to do alone. I would say it’s a good option for when you just feel like playing in your hair or spoiling your hair with an at home spa treatment.

Soft Bonnet Attachment

By Kai Chic

I am more of a hair tool junkie than a product junkie. I don’t like to take chances when it comes to hair products. I’m super picky and generally stick to the same brands. However, I am a sucker for hair tools. Most recently I’ve been wanting this soft bonnet attachment. It’s an attachment that you use with a blow dryer. Yes, I do have my beloved $400 Pibbs Dryer, but sometimes I want to just get in my bed and let my hair dry. I hate going to sleep with wet hair, so air drying is very annoying. I would set a timer and dose off with this on. Oh, but don’t do that if you’re a heavy sleeper… you don’t want to cause any fires. The soft bonnet attachment would also be good look for travelers because it’s so compact and could fold in one of those useless compartments on your suitcase. Also good for college students or women living in compact spaces, this is an inexpensive option especially if you already have a blow dryer. This retails for $9.99 at Sally’s (click photo for details). You can also use it for deep conditioning treatments so instead of buying a heat cap, blow dryer and hard bonnet dryer, you can get all of them in one.

BaByliss Pro: Best Flat Iron for Black, Kinky or Frizzy Hair

Author: Rhonda Jones

Searching for the perfect flat iron? I recommend the BaByliss Pro Nano Titanium Flat Iron. It will leave your hair silky, shiny, and bouncy smooth.

If you have spent hundreds of dollars on flat irons only to be disappointed, I have some great news for you. As an African-American with fine but kinky hair, I too have had the problem of finding a flat iron that would leave my hair silky smooth. Many years ago I had my hair done professionally twice a month. My hair dresser was fabulous. I enjoyed everything from the shampoo to the blow dry. She was the only technician that left my hair shiny and bouncy and it stayed that way until I returned for my next appointment.

Then one week as I arrived for my scheduled appointment, I was told that she had quit and moved to Southern California just that quickly. I was devastated. I tried out a few new hairdressers, but they couldn’t get my hair the way I liked it. Often my hair was weight-down with products or began to frizz up way before my next appointment. For some reason my hair was absorbing all the moisture in the air and after 2 to 3 days it didn’t look like I had ever been to the salon at all!

I also changed shampoos, conditioners, hair dressings, and tried new treatments hoping that would make the difference, but still no change. At that time I didn’t know something as little as a flat iron could make the difference between shiny silk and frizzy hair. But not just any flat iron because I had tried numerous ones in the past, some costing me close to $100.00.

After doing some research on the internet and reading the pros and cons of various flat irons I decided to try the BaByliss Pro Nano Titanium Flat Iron . Not only did it get high marks for quality, the testimonials were overwhelming. Many people sent in the before and after pictures to demonstrate its effectiveness.

Although a bit pricey at around $99.00 on sale, I decided to give it a try and I have never been happier in my entire life. Without fail, each and every time I wash and flat iron my hair it is silky, shiny, and smooth and it stays that way until the next washing. The very first time I did my hair my daughters asked, “Mom did you get your hair done today?” In fact, I am always getting compliments on my hair.

If you are searching for the perfect flat iron for black, kinky, or frizzy hair, I recommend the BaByliss Pro. I have had it over a year and it works perfectly. It has various heat settings that you can adjust to suit individual hair needs, features a built-in ionic generator, and comes in a pretty metallic blue color. You can order it at a great price at Folica. Learn more about the BaByliss Pro Flat Iron.
