In Review: Tangle Teezer

Yesterday, I purchased the Tangle Teezer from Sally Beauty Supply. It was about $10 with taxes. I used it in the shower on soaking wet conditioner-laden hair. I typically just detangle with a  shower comb and occasionally follow up with a Denman brush. Did the Tangle Teezer work better or faster than my typical method? Not that I noticed, but then again… I’ve only used it once. I did not notice any more hair in the Tangle Teezer than I would typically see after using my shower comb or Denman brush. The longer my hair gets, the looser my curls are and when my hair is wet my strands look like they are in the “Type 3A-B” range so this went through my hair fairly easily. It was fun to try, but the jury is still out as to if I will be adding it to my staples.

See YouTube reviews of the Tangle Teezer.

My New Bed Time Dryer

If you’ve been reading Mane and Chic for awhile then you know that I own a Pibbs Kwik Dri, but have been lusting after the Gold ‘N Hot Ionic Soft Jumbo Bonnet Dryer. I’ve had it for about a week now and I’ve used it once. The band irritates me and it’s not as easy to sleep in as I thought especially since it doesn’t have a built in timer. I wouldn’t advise sleeping under a dryer even though I do. I am super careful and I set a loud alarm clock so that I’m not under there all night, drying my hair out or burning the house down. I used it on low heat for about an hour to 90 minutes. It was as loud as my Pibbs, but not disturbingly loud. I was able to take an hour nap while drying my hair. I wish the cord was longer, and the tube that the air travels through gets really hot. I’m really on the fence about keeping it. That being said, if you’re on a tight budget, don’t have a lot of space to store hair equipment or if you travel a lot, this would be an excellent option.

Blow Dryers

I am not a big fan of blow dryers. I rarely ever use them unless I am diffusing curly hair, but if you’re in the market for a hair dryers that straightens you might consider…

This is the T3 Bespoke Labs 83808-SE Featherweight Professional Ionic Ceramic Tourmaline Hair Dryer. It had over 76 reviews, which is a lot for a hair tool. Most others got an average of 3 or 4 reviews, if they were lucky. It was 5-star rated by over 41 people. Click here to read the Amazon reviews. It also retails for $100.11 and I wouldn’t use it enough to justify paying over $100 for it.

Here’s another Amazon best-selling hair dryer (#3 on the best-seller list) and it happens to be under $50 — the Babyliss Pro Ceramix Xtreme Dryer.

When I was younger, I used this dryer by Gold ‘n Hot (and still sold at Sally’s) to straighten.

with the comb attachments

I also used this cheap comb attachment that you can use on any hair dryer. The teeth used to break off all the time.

As I said, I — like many women with curly hair — use a blow dryer to diffuse my hair when it’s in a curly state for volume or when I want it to dry quicker. There is an interesting product by Deva Concepts/ Deva Curl that I’ve been hearing great things about. Most of the bad reviews suggest that the diffuser doesn’t work with other dryers very well. So if you’re in the market for a new dryer and you’re going to use it to diffuse anyway, you might just look into buying their dryer while you’re at it.

Here’s the DevaCurl DevaFuser Kit that retails for $28 on Amazon.

Here’s the dryer and diffuser kit. I’ve seen it retail $185-272 on Amazon.

If you’re not in the market for a dryer and you don’t have a diffuser. I strongly suggest you get one. Here’s a really awesome one that retail for under $5. Click the product photos for more details.

Sally’s also sells a Conair diffuser similar to the Hot Sock for $3.99.

There’s also a diffuser dryer by Curly Top for $19.95 that claims to dry hair without straightening or causing frizz.

New Look For Gold ‘N Hot’s Conditioning Heat Cap

Did you see the new Gold ‘N Hot Professional Conditioning Heat Cap?

It’s certainly more polished than the older model that I have. It costs the same: $29.99. I might have to trade up. I used my Gold ‘N Hot Professional Conditioning Heat Cap weekly and it’s my hair’s BFF. What do you think of the new look?

Hair Reflections, The Mane Clip

Back in 2007, the makers of The Mane Clip sent me a clip to try. I wrote this post about it.

The Mane Clip is the ultimate way to wear your hair in a faux pony tail. The thing I love about it is that was invented by a women of color and if you don’t know by now I’m a huge fan of entrepreneurship especially among women. So, when I find a hair product or hair tool as awesome as this I want to tell everybody about it. I have a black one for my hair (the same one shown above). Maybe you want to wear a ponytail/bun and your hair isn’t long enough or full enough, this is the best $9.99 you’ll ever spend on a hair accessory. Also, for ladies with hair too thick for a regular barrettes or clips, this will effectively hold your hair in place. I’ve used it to make not only ponytails but also buns and up-dos.

Here’s a photo of the Sarah Jessica Parker bun I recreated with The Mane Clip. Basically I started by putting my hair in high ponytail, attached a human hair weft I had inside the combs of The Mane Clip and then attached The Mane Clip to my ponytail. Next, I just styled the hair into a bun. That’s all. It took me 5 minutes. You can buy The Mane Clip at themaneclip.com. It comes in 5 colors and 3 other “Bling” designs (a little more expensive). You can also buy the wefts to use with the clips off the website.
UPDATE
I still use this clip regularly. I actually have two now. I don’t add any hair anymore because I don’t need to. They are the only clips that I own that can hold all of my hair. I have broken so many clips and these are the only ones I have left. I do all kinds of buns and ponytails with my Mane Clips. I really don’t know what I’d do without these little life savers. The little combs inside are very fragile and they bend easily, but that doesn’t bother me.

Hair Reflections, My Roller Collection

In May of 2008, I posted this animated of my roller collection.

Here is a list of the rollers I own. I never run out of rollers when I’m setting. This will be a good staring point if you want to purchase any of these. My hair is fine, but dense. These are the number of rollers I use for a full head roller set.

  • RED Super Rollers (flexi rods) – 45 rollers
  • PURPLE Super Rollers (flexi rods) - 30 rollers
  • BURGUNDY Super Rollers (flexi rods) - 24 rollers
  • PURPLE Magnetic Rollers – 36 rollers
  • ORANGE Perm Rods – 70 rollers

NOT PHOTOGRAPHED CURLFORMERS:

  • Long & Narrow: 56 rollers
  • Extra Wide & Long: 32 rollers
UPDATE
Since this post, I no longer have the Burgundy Super Rollers (flexi rods). They were just too big. I also no longer have the Long & Narrow CurlFormers.

Since then, I have added a few light blue Super Rollers (flexi rods) for my braid-out sets and 5 more hooks for my CurlFormers. I also added large black perm rods. I think that’s it.

I don’t want the orange or back perm rods anymore, I just don’t use them. If you want them, e-mail me. I’d just ask you to pay for $5-10 shipping.

How To Use a Denman and Clumping

A reader asked…

How do you use your Denman brush? I’m considering getting one, but I think my hair is too fine to use it for detangling in the shower.

First, my hair is ultra fine. I ONLY use my Denman as a smoothing tool. Before I use the Denman, my hair is washed, fully detangled, drenched with conditioner and separated into into sections. Before I braid, roll, twist, shingle or do whatever I’m going to do to set my hair, I use a Deman to smooth and clump my curls before I smooth the sections with my fingers. Why? Because it makes my curls clump. What is clumping? Clumping is when a small sections of hair curl in the same direction. This produces larger curls and what appears to be a looser curl pattern. Clumped hair is the opposite of stringy hair. Why is clumping good for hair? It’s better to have large groupings of hair than single strand curls. When your curls are clumped there is less of a chance for frizz and flyaways. Using my Denman in conjunction with smoothing my hair while it’s soaking wet obliterates frizz. You can’t fully understand what the Denman does until you’ve tried it for yourself. Sometimes I just use my fingers to smooth and typically I get a similar effect, but nothing works like a Denman on my hair. This is the only way I use it. I do not recommend using it on dry hair in a natural state and I don’t recommend using it as the only tool to detangle with especially on tight curls and kinky hair. After my clumped hair is dry, I finger style and shake for volume. At this point, you can “fro it out” or whatever you need to do.

Hair Reflections, Applicator Brush

When I first started my transition from relaxed to natural back in 2007, I loved to apply deep conditioner with an applicator brush.

Here’s what I wrote in August of 2007…

I apply my deep conditioner with an applicator brush. Why? Because it’s less messy than using my hands and it’s easier to apply product to the line of demarcation. Also, I can make sure I reach every inch of my head because I use the rattail end of the brush to make even smaller sections during application. I use this method for everything: honey deep conditioners, henna, oils, whatever. It may seem strange, but it’s my personal preference and it has worked very well for me and my new growth.

I don’t use the applicator brush anymore, now I just use seamless rattail end of a comb, smoothing techniques and my gloved hands to really reach every strand. I use gloves because I don’t like the mess. I’m not sure why I ever used the applicator brush. The most important thing in deep conditioning is to get to the ends and this did not work for that purpose. It is fun to use, but so are gloves and when you’re done with the gloves you can just toss them in the trash.
