Setting Techniques: The Twist and Coil

The Twist and Coil is a twist-out with finger coiled ends. The Mane and Chic technique requires that the hair is cleansed, conditioned, reconditioned (with copious amounts of conditioner left in), detangled and smoothed in sections with fingers and/or a Denman brush. Once all of that is done, the hair is twisted until about 0.5″ up from the ends. (You can go up as high as you want). Do not mix the hair. Once you begin the twist, keep the two sections separate. Does that make sense? This is very important. so let me say it again. When you begin the twist make sure the two section stay separate until you reach the ends. Again, do not mix the hair. Next the ends are smoothed around the finger to create the curl. The hair is left untouched until it’s completely dry. Once dry, the hair is finger styled.

I used 1/2″ size twists for this post. Stay tuned because I’m going to show the results of using larger twists. I also did a braid-out using the same size 1/2″ braid. Stay tuned, that’s coming up next. The most obvious difference is that the braid-out created a tighter pattern, but there appeared to be less shrinkage. It  kind of doesn’t make sense because you would think that the looser curl pattern would create longer hair, but that not the case. The difference is very subtle in shrinkage (about 1/2″ more length with a braid-out on this hair). These are the major reasons why I prefer braid-outs over twist-outs, but we’ll talk about that later. I should also mention that the twist-out was a little more voluminous and I guess that’s why women who love “big hair” prefer twist-outs over braid-outs.

Even the Smallest Trims Call for Professional Hair Shears

Many people think using a pair of scissors often used for office-related projects will do.  Because of the intended usages of these non-hair scissors, they are often dull or have residue buildup on the blades. When scissors with residue and or dull blades are used to cut or trim hair, the hair follicles can often time bend instead of being trimmed with a clean cut, causing an uneven cut.  The duller the scissors, the more uneven the cut will be. Regular office scissors are also designed to cut through thicker objects such as paper and even cardboard or plastic. Hair follicles are much finer than any of these materials and require a different shape of blade in order to get a clean cut. Every time you cut your hair, using professional hair scissors is absolutely necessary.

Dedicated hair scissors can be found at any drug store, many department stores as well as high-end hair product stores. Based on the style and quality you chose, professional hair shears can cost as little as 50 dollars or as much as several hundred.  A small price to pay when you consider the damage an old pair of dull scissors may inflict on your daily appearance. This regular hair maintenance is very important to keep a healthy, happy head of hair.

Setting Technique: The Wash and Go

From Left to Right: 1. wet detangled and conditioned hair 2. dry untouched hair 3. finger combed dry hair

The Wash and Go (a.k.a. the “Wash ‘n Go”) is hands down the easiest of all the hair sets. Is it really a setting technique? Yes, I know it sounds like it’s super easy and you can literally just wash and go if you want, but for the best results, the hair should be set. What does that mean? The Mane and Chic technique for the Wash and Go requires that the hair be cleansed, conditioned and detangled in sections. After the hair is detangled in the shower with a Jilbere shower comb, more conditioner is applied and left in. The hair is then smoothed and clumped with fingers and a Denman brush in sections. Hair is left untouched until it is completely dry. Once the hair is dry, it is fluffed (for volume) and styled with fingers.

I’m calling it the Mane and Chic technique not to say I invented the style, but to explain my exact procedure. You may have a different technique and that’s fine. Everybody’s hair is different. You might start out doing things the way I do it and then tweak it to fit your hair. You may even find a much better way of doing it. Whatever the case, it’s all fine so long as you’re happy with your hair in the end. The most important point here is to make sure your hair is smooth and detangled when it’s wet and never ever touch your Wash and Go set until your hair is completely dry.

Video Stocking Hair Tie

This is a stop motion video I made on how I make my stocking hair ties. It’s a super short video showing 3 different ways to use a stocking for your hair. I don’t like making videos, but this was kind of fun. Don’t be creeped out by the ponytail, I thought it was kind of funny. You’ll see…

Swimming and Sunning While Natural

A reader asked…
I’ve been natural since February. I like to go swimming in my pool and I like to go to the beach — a lot. I have Type 4 hair, what do I do?

Aubrey Organics Swimmer's Normalizing Shampoo for Active Lifestyles (16 oz)Mane & Chic replies…
Wear a swimming cap. If it’s your own pool, you don’t have to worry too much about looking cute. Salt water and chlorine are very damaging to hair it’s better to keep it as protected as possible. Some people even double up on swim caps to make sure that water doesn’t get in, but you need to be super careful when using swim caps because if you aren’t, you can rip your hair out. I don’t swim, but someone I trust with healthy long hair told me her process: before swimming, wet your hair in the shower, apply a good conditioner, slick your hair back (or if long enough, slick it into a bun) and apply the swimcap. Now, if being fly is more important to you than protecting your hair at any given moment (I get that), you can do all of the aforementioned tasks except just don’t use the swim cap. When you get home be sure to use a cleanser that gets rid of chlorine (Aubrey Organic’s has a product called Swimmer’s Normalizing Shampoo for Active Lifestyles), do a deep treatment with an amazing deep conditioner, rinse and style as usual. Do this every time you go swimming! For a list of good deep conditioners, see the list from other Mane & Chic readers: Dopest Hair Products of 2009. By the way, some of the same rules apply to all of you sunbathers. When I lived in Miami Beach, I was on the beach or out by the pool nearly everyday. I would always try to wear a hat and I would drench my hair with copious amounts of conditioner and slick it into a bun, making sure to protect my ends. Because I had on so much conditioner, it was like I was doing a deep treatment while sunbathing. I hardly ever had to sit under a heat cap during the warmer months. The sun can wreak serious havoc on your hair the same way it can to your skin if it’s overexposed and unprotected. Find cute hats and scarves and rock them hard on the beach and by the pool this spring/summer.

Fashion Trends Change Every Minute, but Don’t Force Your Hair

Author: Andrew Stratton

In today’s world, where people don’t have time to work out or spend few extra minutes taking care of their hair, there are hair products available which make life easy. Do they really make life easy is something we need to ponder about before using them. There are some who love to brush their hair all day, and claim to have read that it helps hair grow faster, but in fact this is a myth and not true. If we brush our hair too much, it could lead to hair breakage and damage. Most experts advise people to use a comb and not a brush on their hair, no matter what the length is. This is said to untangle all the knots and not be harsh on the hair. Similar, use of hair dryer on a daily basis to dry hair after wash is also not good. It will help keep your hair dry and save you time in towel drying it, but the heat will harm the strands making them break easily. Since work piles up and one needs to rush to their work place, the only task on which they can save time is in such trivial yet important ones.

Women all over the world spend hundreds of dollars on hair dryers, straighteners, irons and on curlers. What they fail to realize is that these hair products will help in creating a new chic look, but will not help hair grow or curb hair loss. Every time a person uses the hair iron, they are subjecting their delicate strands to high temperatures which could cause breakage and hair losing its natural nutrients. If they have frizzy hair, and want to straighten it to make it look smooth and silky, they might use straighteners. All this will lead to drawing away the moisture content from our hair leaving it dry and dehydrated. Again if one were to use hair dryer every time they wash their hair or while setting their hair, the heat generated will harm the hair cuticles causing them to break away.

Trying to stay in sync with fashion and emerging trends will lead to us spoiling our natural beauty while trying to look like someone we are not. For models and actors, they need to let the director decide the look for the day and patiently endure all the treatments they are subjected to. Putting on make up, changing hair styles every couple of minutes, wearing different outfits, is all part of their profession, but it does take a toll on their overall health including their hair. In such cases, they are advised to use hair products that have moisturizer and adequate stimulants to revive the blood cells. They are also encouraged to take vitamin supplements to keep their body energetic and fit.

It is not easy adapting to different emerging trends, and following them. There are some who are still sporting the look that was around in the 70s and for them, this is the most comfortable. There are others who change their hair styles, cut their hair regularly and get other treatments done so they fit in with their peers or grab attention to themselves. These people need to make use of the available hair care products if they wish to maintain their tresses ten years from now.

It is important to keep up with the fashion world, but not at the expense of putting your health at risk. This will not be of any use to you as you will end up losing all your hair.
