Lexi’s Update

Remember Lexi from her first feature on Mane and Chic: LexiWithTheCurls. She did the big chop after 8 months of transitioning and has been natural for almost 7 years.

Lexi’s updated hair care regimen in her own words…
I wash my hair every 3 days since its hot now. I only use sulfate free shampoo now. I use Wen. I try to deep condition every week or two and sit under the steamer. I definitely need to do it a lot more but I’m working on it.

On trimming…
Okay I know this sounds bad, but I didn’t trim my hair for almost a year until about 2 months ago. I have since gotten my hair trimmed/cut 3 times within 2 months. That was a bad decision on my part. I hadn’t straightened my hair in an entire year so I never paid attention to the ends. I couldn’t tell how bad my ends were split in its natural state. I went to one stylist who straightened my hair and she wanted to CUT like 5 inches and I was like “Ohhhhhh NOOO!” . I didn’t let her cut that much because I didn’t trust her judgment, but I have done 2 additional trims since then.

On heat straightening…
I straighten my hair once a month now over the past 3 months. During the summer time it isn’t happening. I may start doing roller sets though since it’s not direct heat.

On color…
Wow! This was the year of coloring for me. I have had my hair colored I think 3 times. I got highlights as I usually do, but I usually let them grow out before getting them redone. So like a dummy, I decided to try to dye my own hair. I wanted to do the two toned look. So I did a portion of the front of my hair. I attempted to dye it blonde, but after leaving the dye on the maximum time, it was orange so I rinsed it out anyway. I HATED the color. I then had to go back and get it fixed. The last time, I got 3 colors. Blonde in the front, the next level..caramel-ish, and the bottom dark brown. My natural hair is pretty dark.

Favorite products…
My favorites are Wen shampoo, Miss Jessie’s Curly Buttercreme, Cantu Shea Leave In and Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. I try not to buy anymore products, but when shopping for hair products I go to CVS or Target WHEN they have sales.

Favorite style…
Wash and go because it’s just so easy and simple.

You should know…
I do natural hair meetups in Atlanta. The first one we had over 40 women (during a flood) so that was pretty good. The last one I co-hosted with Mahogany Knots and over 100 ladies came. We even had Jane Carter and the owners of Uncle Funky’s Daughter come by and speak. We had gift bags for the first 100 with tons of goodies from NaturallyCurly.com, Darcy’s Botanicals, Taaliah Wajid, Beauty by Donna Marie and some others. have some other events that I am in the process of putting together.
Also, I am now a vlogger for NaturallyCurly.com, so you can check out my profile on their site as well as I make videos specifically for their YouTube page.
